Track of the Week: City Escape (Sonic Adventure 2: Battle)

A more fitting musical match for Sonic!

This morning, the movie trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog made its debut online and… well, to say it has some detractors would likely be an understatement. While Sonic’s redesign is easily the most controversial aspect of the trailer, the selection of Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” has also earned plenty of jeers. It’s not exactly a song that screams “Sonic.”

While the early Sonic games boasted some terrific tracks, to me, nothing says Sonic like “City Escape” from Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. Sonic is all about speed, and “City Escape” truly captures that feel, with a fast tempo befitting the stage it appears in. The song set a tone for the rest of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, and it would have been a much more appropriate fit for the movie trailer, either in its original form, or perhaps in a new cover from a more mainstream artist. Coolio’s 1995 Grammy winner is an unquestionable classic, but it’s just a bit too slow for the blue blur, a fact all the more notable given that it’s already closely associated with another film.

The biggest task the Sonic the Hedgehog movie will have ahead of it is truly conveying the character’s speed and fun, just as “City Escape” does. The first glimpse at Paramount’s trailer, with its slow-motion effects and use of “Gangsta’s Paradise,” didn’t quite match that tone. Hopefully the finished product will come a little bit closer.
