9) Faris Scherwiz

First Appearance: Final Fantasy V (SNES, 1992 | Game Boy Advance, 2006)

Faris Scherwiz threw everyone for a loop in Final Fantasy V. Initially appearing as an antagonist, Faris, a pirate captain, takes hostage heroes Bartz, Galuf, and Lenna before going good. More intriguing than Faris’ seemingly-villainous nature, however, is the twist that comes later when it’s revealed that “he” is actually a “she”! Faris spent a good stretch after being introduced pretending to be male, so it was an interesting twist when the game’s cast and players alike discovered the news. Faris’ real name is Sarisa Charlotte Tycoon. A princess, Faris doesn’t cling to any of the stereotypes of one; she’s tough and unflinching, equal to any of the men she leads on her ship. Faris is a true woman warrior, one who sticks with her colleagues through thick and thin, and inspires them to always keep fighting.
