4) Chun-Li

First Appearance: Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (SNES, 1992)

Ported from the smash-hit original arcade version of the same name, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior took everything about the first Street Fighter game and improved upon it. Besides key refinements to the fighting system, the game also made strides in introducing an incredibly rich and diverse roster of characters. One such fighter was Chun-Li, then portrayed as a Chinese martial artist (her Interpol connection would come later). Talk about breaking the mold! Female, Asian, a fighter, and garbed in a qipao, Chun-Li was no-nonsense and ready to clean anyone’s clock. Chun-Li continues to be a fixture of the Street Fighter series, and remains a powerful figure in the video game industry.
