Yoshi.
Most of us have spent the better part of twenty years, give or take, believing that was Mario’s dinosaur pal’s name. The truth, it seems, is much more complicated than that! Revealed via writer Blake J. Harris’s Twitter account (Harris is the author of the recent video game book Console Wars), the information was pulled from the official Super Mario World players guide, which featured a brief bio of the then-new character.
So what is the name, you ask? According to the guide, Yoshi’s full name is T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas. The meaning of that “T” is still a mystery, but the remaining part of the name– wow. That’s a mouthful. Something Yoshi is quite accustomed to, ironically! Also slipped into the mix was the revelation that Mario is classified in the world of the Mushroom Kingdom as a “homo nintendonus.” Oh, will wonders never cease?
