With the departure of its head of indie relations last week, it’s not unreasonable to worry at least a little bit about the future of independent development for Nintendo platforms. Lucky for us, then, that some good news has arrived in the form of a lengthy blog post from Yacht Club Games breaking down in some detail how the release of Shovel Knight has worked out for the studio.
The first month of sales has been really strong across the board, but most reassuringly of all for fans of Nintendo, very strong on 3DS and Wii U which made up 60 percent of the game’s overall sales. Also, keep in mind that Shovel Knight isn’t available outside the US eShop yet either! If it was released in my native UK eShop, I’d pick it up right now! It’s huge news and has to be reassuring to developers already making their games for Wii U and 3DS.
At a time when many in gaming are critical of the approach Nintendo has taken to getting Wii U out there, it’s great to see that if you release something of a high quality, let people know about it, and generate a bit of a buzz then it sells, whatever the platform.
