Newly revealed data has shown that the figurines from the Skylanders series, Disney Infinity, and Nintendo’s own Amiibo are incredibly popular. In fact, they compromise the best-selling gaming accessory of 2015 so far.
According to data tracker Gfk Chart-Tracker, Skylanders toys have seen a 44 percent increase in units sold and a 25 percent increase in revenue so far this year, while Disney Infinity has seen an increase of 56 percent in units sold and 36 percent in revenue.
Nintendo, meanwhile, has seen an even bigger surge in popularity, with the sale of units rising by a massive 145 percent and overall revenue by 121 percent.
Skylanders and Disney Infinity both had new versions released in the last year, and, unsurprisingly, according to Chart-Track, this helped push the demand up. Nintendo, on the other hand, doesn’t have any one game to rely on for its success, with its Amiibo figures working across numerous games instead. The success of Amiibo has, however, been tarnished slightly by a shortage of its more popular figures– something which Nintendo apologised for.
This trend seems to show no signs of slowing either, with Lego Dimensions recently unveiled and the even more recent announcement of Disney Infinity 3.0.
Have you been swept up in the thrill of these real life game characters? If not, do you think that it’s just a craze?
