Last week, Playtonic Games officially unveiled Yooka-Laylee, a spiritual successor to the popular Banjo-Kazooie titles on Nintendo 64. The title’s Kickstarter campaign began the following day, reaching full funding in less than an hour. While that would be impressive enough on its own, the campaign is still going very, very strong.
As of this writing, the Kickstarter has amassed more than $2 Million US dollars, smashing every stretch goal that Playtonic had set. The developer had hoped to bring in additional former Rare artists, add new bosses, and, most importantly, simultaneously release the title on Wii U, PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Playtonic even added new stretch goals over the weekend, including a “GK Rap” (named after Grant Kirkhope, the man behind the infamous DK Rap), a developer walkthrough with commentary, and an orchestral score. So far, only the orchestral score stretch goal remains, and the amount of money required will likely be surpassed soon. As a result of fan interest, we’re going to see a bigger title and it will arrive on the Wii U on the same day as every other console!
Yooka-Laylee is now the fastest video game to ever reach $1 million dollars on Kickstarter, and there are still 43 days left! With all of the campaign’s goals already surpassed, it will be interesting to see if Playtonic Games decides to add even more. Could a physical console release be a possibility? Perhaps this will catch Nintendo’s attention, as well. Playtonic has shown an interest in implementing Amiibo support, and has even spoken to Nintendo about the possibility. With so many people showing an interest in the game, Nintendo might be more inclined than they were before!
