In April, fans were taken aback by the sudden postponement of Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders. The move came in response to the White House announcing a battery of tariff increases for countries around the globe, including ones that handle the manufacturing of various Nintendo products, including Switch 2. Pre-orders were opened up a couple of weeks later on April 24 and much to the surprise of many fans, the $450/$500 MSRP remained intact (despite the prices of accessories rising).

For those who might be curious, yes, the move was very intentional. Speaking with IGN, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser said that maintaining Switch 2’s price point was essential. Here are his remarks:

We really thought it was important that we established that price point, even after further tariffs were announced, to give consumers that comfort that they would be able to purchase at that price.

It’s still a very fluid situation, and it’s difficult to determine what may be happening in the upcoming months and weeks. But our commitment is to find ways within existing or changing market conditions to make our products, including Switch 2 hardware, as obtainable as we possibly can.

Nintendo is of course leaving the door open for potential price increases by saying “it’s difficult to determine what may be happening in the upcoming months and weeks,” but for now, at least, Switch 2 is “obtainable at $450-$500. Things are certainly looking promising for the console, with some analysts predicting that Switch 2 might even break launch day sales records when it hits stores next month.
