Wakka wakka! Gaming’s oldest mascot is back again in a new game that’s coming to Wii U and Nintendo 3DS later this year, Namco Bandai has announced. The game is Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, which is based on the animated television series airing this summer.
The Wii U game appears to be a 3D action platformer of sorts. Pac-Man can run around and eat the ever present ghosts, and he can gain suits that grant him new abilities. The Nintendo 3DS version will be a sidescrolling platformer that features the more classic look of the yellow pac.
Namco Bandai explains the gamplay of the new title in its press release:
Not only will PAC-MAN and the Ghostly Adventures feature a revamped PAC-MAN universe, but it will also hearken back to PAC-MAN origins with classic elements such as Ghost encounters. The Ghost-chomping mechanics return from the original PAC-MAN but with exciting powered up variations in PAC-MAN and the Ghostly Adventures, creating an innovative yet familiar gameplay experience.
That’s a lot of Pac-Man in caps. Check out the trailer for the Wii U version below, and view screenshots of the 3DS game at the Siliconera link.

…Huh. I’m all in favor of new 3D platformers, but as with the Lego games, there doesn’t appear to be much in the way of subtlety here. Cue the Dreamworks smile!
I suppose I’ll have to reserve judgement until I can see how it actually plays.
