Nintendo’s future lineup for Wii U and 3DS looks great. However, with the exception of The Wonderful 101, every title coming out in the near future from Nintendo is from an established franchise. Of course, this should come as no surprise, considering Nintendo always relies on its key properties to push sales, and focuses on original gameplay over original characters.

But wait! It seems that Nintendo will be getting a brand new IP on Wii U fairly soon. In an interview with Famitsu, the indefatigable Shigeru Miyamoto admitted that he is working on a new franchise that will come to Wii U. Miyamoto said that after Spring 2014 with the release of Mario Kart 8, Wii U will have a large selection of beloved franchises available (Donkey Kong, Wii Fit, Mario, Mario Kart, etc.). So, after that would be prime time for a new Nintendo series to rear its head.

But what sort of game is it? Miyamoto is tight-lipped: “I can’t say too much in detail right now, but I’ve been pretty busy with this title these days.” Dedicated Nintendo fans know a couple things about how Miyamoto approaches designing new games. First, he has to have a gameplay concept that won’t fit into existing characters’ games. Second, the games are usually related to some new hobby the man has picked up. So, this might mean Miyamoto has all-new gameplay ideas in store. As for his hobbies, I think Nintendo told him not to talk about them to avoid spoiling new games. But still! New franchise! Get some!
