Last week, Nintendo teased a new game with a mysterious teaser dubbed Emio featuring footage of a mysterious, haunting figure in a trench coat and a paper bag over his head with an ominous smile drawn across the front. Who was Emio? Well, we finally have some answers as Nintendo has announced the first new game in the Famicom Detective Club in over 30 years: Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club. The company released this interview with the game’s producer, Metroid-creator Yoshio Sakamoto. Note that Emio is rated M, so the interview has been age-restricted on YouTube:
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is a visual novel where players are cast as an assistant private investigator for the Utsugi Detective Agency looking into a series of murders. The killings seem to be tied to the mysterious Emio, a serial killer who’s something of an urban legend. Players will look for clues, scrutinize the testimony of witnesses and suspects, and try to solve the mystery.
In case you’ve forgotten, this isn’t the first Famicom Detective Club game on Nintendo Switch. The first two games, Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind were both released in May of 2021. This sequel looks to utilize the same foundation built for those remakes and will include English language support with Japanese voice acting.
There is a physical edition of the game confirmed for the West, but Japan seems to be getting a collector’s edition that hasn’t been announced for here just yet.
