Talk about unexpected. Famicom Detective Club comprised a duo of games released in Japan for Famicom Disk System. Beginning in 1988 with Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and then followed by the prequel Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind, the series was written by Yoshio Sakamoto. Famous for his work on Metroid, Famicom Detective Club was where Sakamoto first made his mark with Nintendo. While adored in Japan, neither Famicom Detective Club game had ever been localized for release in the West… until now! Yes, right now! Check it out:
On May 15, Nintendo will bring both The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind to Western fans for the very first time. Both games have been modernized with updated graphics and control schemes. The pair of games are narrative-driven adventures, with winding twists and high drama throughout. It’s possible to purchase both titles individually on the eShop, but buying both bundled together reduces the cost.
This is an incredibly cool surprise, although being able to play the original versions would have been icing on the cake. Regardless, hopefully fans show some interest in Famicom Detective Club—alongside Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & The Blade of Light, this is the second time in as many years that Nintendo has resuscitated formerly Japan-only games for release abroad. Maybe Nintendo will be inclined to keep this trend up if fans react well!
