Could Soul Calibur II Arrive on Wii U?

Namco Bandai hints at the possibility.

When Soul Calibur II arrived on the Nintendo GameCube, it had an advantage over the other console versions: a certain green-tunic wearing hero named Link joined the cast. The results spoke for themselves, as Soul Calibur II went on to sell more copies on the GameCube than on any other console. So, when Namco Bandai announced that the fighter would receive an HD re-release, many fans were perplexed as to why the game was announced for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but not the Wii U. Well, it looks like that may change.

When asked about whether the title could see release on Nintendo’s latest console, series producer Masaaki Hoshino said it “wasn’t out of the question.” Hoshino went on to say that strong sales of the other versions, as well as a desire from the fans, could make it more likely. An online petition for the title has reached more than 800 signatures. You can find it here.

    TLDR: Meh…

Soul Caliber 2 was a great game – arguably better than recent sequels. But would I care about a HD remake on Wii U?

Frankly, Soul Caliber has abandoned Nintendo consoles for so long that the answer is “no”. The series has gone too cheesecake for my liking, and it’s something that I’ve been out of touch with since GameCube days. A new entry in the series might be more appealing – but even then I’m not sure how much I would care.

And the whole “vote with your dollar” argument doesn’t fly either: even though it would be nice to see the series return to Nintendo consoles, I have no confidence that sales figures matter. They certainly didn’t when Soul Caliber 2 was first released on GameCube, after all.
