Checkpoints and More Coming to Super Mario Maker

A free update brings the much-requested feature to Super Mario Maker next week.

Nintendo has announced that it will be releasing a free update for Super Mario Maker next week on November 4, which will add five new features to the popular level editor.

The most exciting new feature will no doubt be the addition of checkpoints, which have been sorely missing from the game. After next week’s update, you’ll be able to shake an arrow sign to turn it into a checkpoint flag, allowing other players to restart midway through one of your levels should they lose a life. With the abundance of challenging courses available on the game’s servers, this is definitely a welcome addition!

Along with checkpoints, players can now sequence power-ups. By stacking a Mushroom over a Fire Flower and placing them inside a Question Block, you’ll be able to get a different power-up depending on Mario’s state; hitting the block while small Mario, for example, will produce the Mushroom, while hitting it as Super Mario will produce the Fire Flower. Other new features coming with the update include a more challenging version of Gnat Attack, a new category in Course World for levels created by Nintendo, and special Event Courses that run worldwide for a limited time.
