2020 has been on of the craziest years in the lifetimes of countless people across the globe. From civil unrest to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, this has been a year of uncertainty and fear for many. In the midst of all this pandemonium, however, video games have been a beacon of light for droves of the millions of people who have found themselves trapped at home. One particularly lustrous ray in the darkness was Nintendo’s beloved life pseudo-simulator Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Purchased by millions of consumers all over the world, New Horizons became something of a phenomenon when it launched this past March. Already one of the most hotly anticipated games on Switch, interest in the title became frenzied thanks to the Animal Crossing series’ ability to bring people together via online multiplayer. Friends and family gathered together in New Horizons when the world at large could ill afford for them to meet in person. It has proven to be an immense comfort during such trying times.

There has arguably never been a more perfect storm during which a video game has ever launched, but the intoxicating gameplay of New Horizons itself was as much to do with its success as anything else. Now, The Game Awards, the annual ceremony that honors games and creators throughout the industry for their work during the past year, has nominated New Horizons for its prestigious Game of the Year award. Here is the full list of nominees:

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  • Doom Eternal
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake
  • Ghost of Tsushima
  • Hades
  • The Last of Us Part II

It’s quite a roster of extraordinary games, but New Horizons certainly deserves to be considered for the award. Congratulations to Nintendo for the nom, and hopefully come December 10 the game will be crowned the winner.
