The Best Games of 2010: WiiWare
While the rate of game releases on the console front may be dying down, that doesn’t mean a few gems don’t pop up every now and then. This year, it was a tight competition amongst the top titles, but when all is said and done, there can only be one best overall. Did ArtStyle color our hearts? Or did we enjoy taking a Bit.Trip down memory lane?

BEST WIIWARE GAME

Bit.Trip Runner

Gaijin Games has created a stellar series with Bit.Trip, and Bit.Trip Runner continues that tradition by being the best WiiWare title overall for 2010. The recipe for success: take a familiar platforming experience, throw it on-rails with a dash of collecting gold bricks sprinkled throughout. The soundtrack is pretty rad– so rad, in fact, that you can purchase it if you’d like. The simplistic graphics we all know and love from the previous Bit.Trip entries makes a return, but that doesn’t mean the experience is cheap; actually, it’s hard. Mind-numbingly hard. The kind of hard that makes you question your abilities as a gamer in the first place. And we couldn’t love it more.

BEST WIIWARE GAME RUNNERS-UP

Cave Story

Do you love platformers? Do you love great games? Would you love to play such a title that isn’t made by Nintendo? Then check out Cave Story. The title has been available for free on PC since 2004, but this year, after many delays, the classic was remade with new graphics and music and finally arrived on a Nintendo console, where it truly feels at home. Featuring gameplay similar to everyone’s favorite NES titles, Cave Story is easily worth the 1200 Wii points. Besides, you know it’s good if we at Nintendojo feel it deserved a 9.8/10.

Fluidity

Released at the end of the year, Fluidity is a blast of a physics title wherein gamers guide a pool of water throughout a variety of obstacle courses. However, instead of controlling the molecules themselves– which can take forms of liquid, gas, or solid– the world itself is controlled, where you tilt it around and let physics do the rest of the work. The result is a puzzler that is a custom fit with Wii’s remote and amazingly addictive.

I love Fluidity. It’s terrific. Most of my all-time fave WiiWare titles came out last year, but there were plenty that were great this year, too, and more still on my list to try, like HoopWorld and Heron: Steam Machine. Though I think Fluidity will remain tops for me, even over ArtStyle: light trax and the other games listed here. Sploosh.

My only regret is that Cave Story did not win… :)

I could have used the Wii points that I spent on Sonic 4 towards cave story…….I would have ended up with a much better game.

I’m honestly surprised that Cave Story didn’t win. But Bit.Trip Runner definately seems like a title that would win. I can’t decide what to spend my wii points on now.
