This week, Nintendojo is proud to honor some of the best third party games to grace Nintendo systems. To kick things off, this week’s Track of the Week is dedicated to a song from one of GameCube’s best third party franchises, Resident Evil. Specifically, this week’s musical selection comes from the remake of the first game in the franchise. While Resident Evil 4 is widely known as one of GameCube’s best games (if not the best), the remake of the first game in the series helped a new generation of fans discover the franchise, nearly three years before that venerated title hit Nintendo’s little purple box.
As a big fan of the Resident Evil franchise, I can tell you that there are few things more calming than entering a room and hearing the Save Room music playing. As the only real safe haven from zombies and other mutations, hearing that music meant that fans could finally breathe a sigh of relief. What I really like about the various incarnations of the Save Room music is that, no matter how soothing the track might be, there’s always a hint of despair. It’s as though the composers can’t help but remind players that dreadful things wait outside the room.
Since those hallowed days of the survival horror genre, the Resident Evil franchise has seen a bit of a fall from grace. Resident Evil 5 and 6 both took the franchise in directions that fans and critics found less enjoyable than previous titles. Luckily, the excellent Resident Evil: Revelations has helped bring the franchise back to some of its former glory. Hopefully the next iteration in the series will continue that trend.

Nice choice! Love this song.
My first experience with Resident Evil was on Dreamcast with Code Veronica. It too had a great save room theme.
