5. Ocarina of Time‘s Fisherman in Twilight Princess

Twilight Princess Fisherman Screen

Breaking in at #5 is an old friend. There’s nothing like continuity in the Zelda universe, and this special moment from Twilight Princess says it all. Inside Hena’s Fishing Hole, there’s a series of photos on the wall inside the hut, and the first one contains the fisherman from the one and only Ocarina of Time, and to top it all off, he’s carrying the legendary Hylian Loach as well. The quality of this photo isn’t as good as the others, but it pays homage to a bygone era.

When I found this secret in 2006, a wave of nostalgia rushed through me because I knew the game was meant to take place about a century after Ocarina of Time. Hena has the fisherman’s itch and believes to be his descendant, and just like with The Wind Waker, seeing something like this made me long for the Hyrule of old.

Star Fox … I miss you … you were so cool … Retro, please tell me that’s what you have been working on with such fervor….

Maybe not quite a cameo, but I loved seeing E Gadd’s inventions play a role in Super Mario Sunshine. At one point, Bowser Junior refers to him as “the strange old man with the white coat”. Plus, FLUDD kinda sounds like the ole professor.
