Everyone loves a good surprise. Maybe when you were younger, your parents bought you a gaming gift that knocked your socks off. And perhaps one surprise led to another. Throughout our gaming escapades, certain moments catch us off guard and stick with us for years to come. Nintendo has certainly surprised us many times and it’s those special encounters which keep us thinking long after the end credits have rolled.

From Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, ten surprise appearances stand out. From unexpected character appearances to hidden objects acknowledging other franchises and star-studded cameos, they all left smiles on our faces. As you make your way through this Top Ten, you will begin to see a direct connection between some of the greatest surprise appearances and the greatest games.     Star Fox … I miss you … you were so cool … Retro, please tell me that’s what you have been working on with such fervor….

    Maybe not quite a cameo, but I loved seeing E Gadd’s inventions play a role in Super Mario Sunshine. At one point, Bowser Junior refers to him as “the strange old man with the white coat”. Plus, FLUDD kinda sounds like the ole professor.
