9. Paintings of Mario in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The last place you would expect to see Mario, Yoshi, Peach and Bowser is in Hyrule Castle. Well, in 1998 Nintendo chose to have a little fun by placing paintings in Princess Zelda’s castle which honored the Mushroom Kingdom cast of characters. With Super Mario 64 flying off store shelves just over two years earlier, this light-hearted nod to the poster boy of Nintendo and Nintendo 64 definitely put a smile on our faces.

Unfortunately, we never get to walk by those paintings inside the guarded castle, but you can get a better look at them by adjusting the camera near one of the windows in Zelda’s beautiful courtyard. I won’t spoil the surprise but for those of you with a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, look through the window in the same area to see something special.

Star Fox … I miss you … you were so cool … Retro, please tell me that’s what you have been working on with such fervor….

Maybe not quite a cameo, but I loved seeing E Gadd’s inventions play a role in Super Mario Sunshine. At one point, Bowser Junior refers to him as “the strange old man with the white coat”. Plus, FLUDD kinda sounds like the ole professor.
