4. Link and Zelda
This one is a bit cliché, but you all knew it would be somewhere in this list. Though throughout the years there have been several incarnations of these characters, it’s clear that the underlying romance between Link and Zelda spans the generations. While at first, it could be said that Link is just being chivalrous, it’s apparent that he saves Zelda so many times out of love, not duty. An implied kiss shared in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link shows that there was something going on from the get go, but other than that there was nothing for years…Then, In Ocarina of Time, there’s an implied crush when they first meet as children. In adulthood, Zelda even ends up taking to cross-dressing and following him around as Sheik. Okay, so that’s a bit creepy, but Twilight features displays of ‘love’ that outshine this one’s creepiness a thousandfold.
In Skyward Sword, the attraction is at it’s most obvious, however. They go to school together, she sends him mail by Loftwing despite living in the same building (the Zeldaverse equivalent of flirtatious texting), and he is competing for her affections against Groose. This is the first time there has actually been a rival for Zelda’s love, and maybe this is why Link finally stepped up his game, stopped being coy, and finally, after 25 years of waiting, went on a date with her. Better late than never, eh Link?
