6. Wario and Money
Mario’s aforementioned impostor, Wario, may be known for kidnapping Princess Daisy, but he didn’t actually want to marry her. Tatanga wanted to, but Wario (who had instructed Tatanga to kidnap Daisy in the first place) was really after something else: money. Wario set himself realistic goals, and knew that money was plentiful in the Mushroom Kingdom (coins float in the sky; I wonder if hyperinflation is a problem there?), whereas anatomically compatible lifeforms were not.
Wario’s plot to kidnap Daisy was just a distraction so he could Occupy Mario’s Castle and redistribute wealth…into his own pocket. This obsession with wealth continued into his next appearance in the series, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, in which he tries to steal the many treasures of Captain Syrup. She is probably his ideal partner, and yet he ignores her in favour of gaining more cash. As his games progress, Wario has even taken to plundering ancient tombs. He may save a few people on his way to incalculable wealth, but it’s only the rewards he’s really after. Truly, an immortal love story.
