It was starting to look like vaporware, wasn’t it? We’re referring of course to Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate was announced way back in 2021 during the 35th anniversary celebration of Dragon Quest. Skip ahead five years and a lot has happened since then, including the passing of designer/manga legend Akira Toriyama and the exit of series producer Yu Miyake. Now, during the 40th anniversary livestream of Dragon Quest, Square Enix has revealed that the game is not dead, but simply reborn as Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams. Here’s a small glimpse at the game:
The video features Yuji Horiiand Yosuke Saito talking about the shift. Along with a new name, the logo has also been refreshed, abandoning the darker, more foreboding one that had been debuted back in 2021. The footage seems to be promising a game more reminiscent of what the series is known for as opposed to the potentially drearier direction XII might have originally been headed towards.
Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams also alleges to feature designs from Toriyama. Perhaps they were produced prior to his passing? If we find out more, we’ll be sure to share it. There’s no release date nor confirmed platforms for Beyond Dreams, but once we learn both, we’ll be sure to share them with all of you. In the interim, why not tell us how you’re liking (or not liking) Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams down below!
