This week, Nintendo provided us with plenty to do on both its systems, but the Splatoon demo on Wii U easily takes the spot as the most exciting part of the list. If you’re not into that sort of thing, however, there’s still enough interesting stuff to keep you entertained until next week and beyond. Let’s take a look!

Releases

Wii U eShop

  • Splatoon demo – Free – Trial version of Nintendo’s upcoming wacky shooter is finally available to the masses. Just take notice that this multiplayer demo will only be functional duringĀ 8-9 PM Pacific Time on Friday, May 8, and also Saturday, May 9, at both 4-5 AM and 12-1 PM.
  • High Strangeness – $9.99 – The game is being decribed by its developers, Barnyard Intelligence Games, as being a 12-bit adventure, a hybrid between 8- and 1- bit games. This is certainly not the first time such concept is being used, as Adventures of Pip, for example, also delivers jumping between different visual styles as an interesting gameplay mechanic. You can find out whenever or not High Strangeness succeeds in its ideas in our review.

Wii U Virtual Console

  • Mega Man & Bass – $7.99 – The original SNES version of Mega Man & Bass never made it outside Japan, but we did get the GBA port, which by all means was just as solid. Now you can finally stop searching all around for a GBA cartridge, as this very underrated Mega Man title becomes available as a digital download on your Wii U.
  • Metal Marines – $7.99 – The SNES library is full of great games involving mechs. While some titles like Cybernator are well-known even to modern gamers, some games are a little bit too obscure. Metal Marines is one of those games, but it shouldn’t stop you from giving this old-school real-time strategy game a chance.

Wii U DLC

  • Zen Pinball 2: Iron & Steel Pack – free or $4.99 – includes the CastleStorm and Wild West Rampage tables
  • Zen Pinball 2: Marve’s Avengers: Age of Ultron – free or $2.99

3DS eShop

  • Bloo Kid 2 – $3.99 – While the original only came out on mobile devices, the sequel makes its way to Nintendo’s current portable system. We’re being promised five worlds with nine levels each of retro-style platforming.
  • Johnny Dynamite – $4.99 – Another retro-style platformer with a twist, or heavy use of dynamite rather. By the looks of it, this one is more on the cheaper side of things.

3DS Retail

  • Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker – $49.99 – Atlus sure is keeping our 3DS consoles busy lately. This week you can dive into an enhanced port of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2, which originally came out on Nintendo DS. If you like good tactical RPGs or just the Shin Megami Tensei style in general, this one is a no brainer.
  • Puzzle & Dragons Z + Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition – $29.99 – Stripped of its icky free-to-play component, Puzzle & Dragons found a new home on Nintendo 3DS. The Western release of the game comes with a budget price and a bonus Super Mario Bros. version of Puzzle & Dragons. While the game itself releases on May 22, you can already purchase the game digitally and start the pre-load.
