4) Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Play it on: Wii
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories marked the series’ debut on a Nintendo console, and what a perfect entrance it was. Shattered Memories is a remake of the original PlayStation Silent Hill, featuring rich, updated graphics and Wii Remote compatible controls. Shattered Memories casts the player as writer Henry Mason, who is searching for his daughter after a car crash. What makes this game different from other horror titles is that there’s no real way of fighting back against the monsters and creatures that populate the town. Mason can run, shove enemies away, and knock down objects to slow down his attackers, but has no real way of defending himself. This makes exploration incredibly tense, as the game leaves the player with no other option but to flee.
This lack of empowerment makes Shattered Memories a more realistic horror game than most. As opposed to the typical setup of having guns and knives to take down waves of monsters and zombies, this game focuses on the opposite and more likely scenario of a person being basically defenseless. The result is some of the most adrenaline pumping chase sequences in any game. Shattered Memories also gets into the player’s head a bit, as an actual personality test is administered at the beginning that influences aspects of the game. This profiling mechanic alters certain colors, events, and enemies, with a fairly wide number of possible combinations to experience. Shattered Memories will have you marveling at its lush graphics and scared to open doors into the next room, and you’ll love every moment.
Moon is my favorite DS game. Great recommendation.
Great list of games!
Dead Space: Extraction (Wii) was my October “scary game” of choice… and it succeeded in totally creeping me out more than once. Another great title for Nintendo horror fans to check out, even if Halloween has already gone by.
