10) Luigi’s Mansion
Play it on: GameCube
Part Resident Evil lampoon, part whimsical adventure game, Luigi’s Mansion is more candy apple than skin crawler. In terms of atmosphere, however, few do derelict and spooky better than this game. Beautifully rendered and intricately detailed, Luigi’s Mansion convinces players that they’re genuinely roaming the halls of a haunted house. When Mario is abducted by Boos, Luigi is left to rescue his big bro with little more than a glorified vacuum cleaner. While not the scariest game on this list, Luigi’s Mansion embodies the fun and fantasy of Halloween perfectly.
Luigi’s Mansion isn’t a point-and-click adventure, but it can feel that way at times. Using Luigi’s Poltergust 3000, players interact with the mansion constantly to progress. Spinning fan blades, opening oven doors, and sucking up curtains all yield new discoveries that may or may not leave Luigi in tears. There are just enough moments where a ghost will pop out at random that it keeps the player antsy. Visual cues are also done very well, with frost coming out of Luigi’s mouth as he trembles his way around a room plagued with spirits. Players won’t find themselves in a sweaty mass of neurosis at the end of Luigi’s Mansion, but there are enough playful twists and turns to put a grin across anyone’s face and remind them that Halloween is as much about treats as it is tricks.
Moon is my favorite DS game. Great recommendation.
Great list of games!
Dead Space: Extraction (Wii) was my October “scary game” of choice… and it succeeded in totally creeping me out more than once. Another great title for Nintendo horror fans to check out, even if Halloween has already gone by.
