Although Nintendo was once again able to skim by with a modest profit over the course of the last quarter, the outlook is still grim for its floundering Wii U console. Despite the release of high profile and, more importantly, high quality titles such as Pikmin 3, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD the company’s latest financials show that it was only able to move 300,000 Wii U units worldwide over the past three months. Admittedly these numbers could well increase moving into winter, as Wind Waker was only technically available for ten days during this fiscal quarter, and only digitally during that time.
The news on the 3DS front was much more encouraging as Nintendo reported 2.49 million units sold in the past three months, quite an increase even over the first quarter of this year. Software for Nintendo’s handheld was no slouch either with a reported 16 million units sold, largely attributable to Tomodachi Collection in Japan, and the continually strong worldwide sales of Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
Moving into the holiday season Nintendo will be banking on continued sales of Wind Waker as well as the superb looking Super Mario 3D World, and a few select third party offerings to drive console sales. This writer personally hopes the tides turn in the company’s favor, as he loves his Wii U and wants millions more to bask in its glory.
