Earlier this year, Level-5 announced a bold new direction for the Yo-Kai Watch franchise. The new multimedia effort known as Yo-Kai Watch: Shadowside features a darker, more mature take on Level-5’s traditionally younger skewing series. At the time, no specific game or platform was announced, but this week’s issue of Famitsu will pull back the curtain on Yo-Kai Watch 4, a Switch-exclusive title set to arrive in Japan later this year!
Despite some recent difficulties outside of Japan, the Yo-Kai Watch franchise has been a reliably high quality series of JRPGs, particularly for younger audiences. While the Shadowside promotional art is certainly on the darker side, details remain slim on what to expect from Yo-Kai Watch 4. According to Level-5’s CEO Akihiro Hino “its content is getting a super high-grade power up, including some things that will surprise everyone.”
Considering the upgrade in power from 3DS to Switch, the comments aren’t all that surprising. It will certainly be interesting to see how the developer utilizes the Switch platform’s abilities, at the very least! It will also be interesting to see what the announcement might mean for a possible localization for Yo-Kai Watch 3, as well. While Nintendo still remains admirably committed to their previous handheld, the company could very well prioritize a domestic release for the newer title instead.
