Recently, horror games seem to have primarily been focused on being first-person experiences where the key mechanic is simply survival in face of overwhelming odds. Whispering Willows looks to be a nice change of pace, preferring hand drawn visuals, side-scrolling worlds, and a focus on puzzle solving over what we have come to expect from the creepier side of gaming.
Indie developers Nightlight Interactive and Abstraction Games are partnering to bring Whispering Willows to Wii U eShop and describe the game as, “a horror themed side-scrolling adventure where players take the role of Elena, a young girl determined to solve the mystery behind her missing father.”
In terms of gameplay, Whispering Willows revolves around Elena’s ability to project her soul outside of her body. This allows her to, “interact with the benevolent spirits and wicked wraiths that used to dwell within the walls of the sinister Willows Mansion,” and, “solve puzzles, help lost spirits, and uncover the mysteries behind her missing father.”
As someone who has grown somewhat tired of trekking through the grey, poorly lit hallways of abandoned asylums while being chased by freakishly mutated patients and/or ghosts while looking for audiologs to fill in the backstory, I must admit I’m intrigued. Between the impressive visuals, the literal shift in perspective, and apparent focus on puzzle solving and character interaction, I can say that Whispering Willows has, at the very least, earned my interest. Whispering Willows will hit Wii U eShop this summer, so hopefully it won’t be too long until we have more to share.

while I need more than just a trailer before I decide on a game, as far as trailers go this one has me quite intrigued, so I will be actively seeking more info on this title.
