The Super Mario Bros. Movie just can’t be stopped. The film finally released in its home country of Japan over the weekend, propelling it past the $1 billion mark. According to the Wall Street Journal, no other film has even managed to surpass $500 million thus far in 2023. Talk about your golden coins, the Brooklyn duo is practically swimming in them at this point.
Not only is The Super Mario Bros. Movie proving to be a genuine juggernaut, it’s also one of the biggest successes for Illumination, the animation house that worked with Nintendo to bring the movie to life. It now sits as the studio’s most successful film in Japan to date. The sky seems the limit for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but we’ll see how it fares against Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which launches this week.
