Square Enix says it saw a 7.7 percent drop in profits, as well as a 3.5 percent drop in net sales by the end of 2024. Square is attributing these slips to a number of different factors, including the underperformance of mobile and PC titles, as well as new games that failed to meet the highs of titles like Final Fantasy XVI, for instance. However, while that’s certainly not very encouraging news, there are a couple of bright spots.
The biggest is arguably that of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake helping to push Square’s HD game sales. DQIII performed better “than initially assumed,” helping to at last offer some relief in what was otherwise a less successful year for the company. Layoffs and turmoil remain the norm in the AAA video game space, so it’s disheartening to hear yet another company is seeing a dip in performance like this. Hopefully with the eventual release of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake things will turn around for Square Enix in the future.
