Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake launches on Nintendo Switch November 14, 2024. While the game certainly has a lot of anticipation, especially being a remake of one fans’ favorite installments in the series, there are many who are also displeased with the censorship and alterations that have been made to the game. Among the disappointed is Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii himself, who spoke at Tokyo Game Show in an interview about both topics:
東京ゲームショーで、DQ3の衣装変更に関して。
The reason why the exposure of costumes in DQ3 needs to be reduced, as explained in an interview at TGS.#DQ3HD2D #ドラゴンクエスト3 #DragonQuest#TGS2024 pic.twitter.com/wzMoCnVYjN— Valute News (@saou0345) September 29, 2024
Along with the above video, here are a couple of quotes regarding the removal of male and female options for the player character, as well as the censorship of some of artist Akira Toriyama’s designs:
“The idea of sex education that comes from religious concepts from the West is in America, right? Their idea of compliance is really narrow. When publishing comics over there, you have to separate them by age. If it’s a Shonen Jump manga, you can’t publish it unless it’s 13 years old or older. You have to do all the retakes. You have to take out insurance in case of a lawsuit. It’s really troublesome. That’s why Japan is also badly influenced by that.”
“You can choose a male or female protagonist, but you can’t say that you choose a man or a woman. They are Type 1 and Type 2. I wonder who on earth would complain if we made them male and female. I don’t know.”
It is interesting that despite the various outcries over these changes, companies like Square Enix continue to plod along with little to no regard for the displeasure of fans. It is a trend not just here in the West, but also with Japanese developers, too. With companies like Ubisoft and PlayStation suffering recent major losses owing, at least in part, to content choices in their games, it will be interesting to see how long publishers and devs continue to make these divisive decisions.
