On Thursday, July 10, 2025, James Carter Cathcart, a voice actor most notably known for voicing popular Pokémon animated tv series characters such as Meowth and Professor Oak passed away at the age of 71. According to TMZ, this came about after Cathcart had battled throat cancer starting in 2023.

Although Cathcart was most known for taking on many voice roles, big and small, in various Pokémon series, his work is spread across many different anime characters, as well as voice roles in commercials. Some of his Pokémon roles ended up transferring across mediums, with his voice being used for Pokémon characters in Super Smash Bros Brawl, a video game for Nintendo Wii.

Outside of his voice work, Cathcart also spent time performing musically with several well known artists, having been a talented pianist. Some artists he performed with include Blondie and The Monkees. Back to Pokémon related work, he wrote the dub scripts for Pokémon on his own for around 17 years.

Cathcart will be known for a very large portfolio of voice and writing work, but his costars remembered him with social media posts, including a post from Erica Schroeder, known for voicing other well-known Pokémon characters, such as Nurse Joy.
