SGF ’26: A Pair of Cuphead Games Are on the Way

Time for a little good news, bad news. First, the good news: Studio MDHR is working on a sequel to its masterpiece, Cuphead. There was no footage shown off, but there was an amusing puppet who made the announcement. There was also no release date for this sequel, either. Considering it’s likely going to take a long time before Cuphead 2 or whatever it ends up being called is released, Studio MDHR has another game cued up for fans to play while they wait. Take a look at Mighty Cuphead Adventure:

As the trailer shows, Mighty Cuphead Adventure is an old school 2D shooter that skews towards the glory days of 8-bit gaming. However, while Nintendo fans might immediately think of NES when it comes to that period of the industry, Studio MDHR has another 8-bit console in mind for Mighty Cuphead Adventure: SEGA Master System!

That’s right, the game is so authentically designed for SEGA Master System that an honest to God cartridge for the system is going to be produced. That’s pretty dang cool. Mighty Cuphead Adventure is described as being “currently in development,” and knowing Studio MDHR, well, this stopgap might be a ways away before fans ever get to play it. Still, once we learn a release date, we’ll share it with all of you.

Now, for the bad news. Will either of these two games make it to a Nintendo console? The reason we ask is because things have been changing over at Xbox. For one thing, it’s now called XBOX, as new CEO Asha Sharma has been making changes left and right since taking over. Sharma wants to bring the XBOX brand back to prominence, and one of the hot button issues for the company has been exclusivity of games.

As you may or may not have noticed, the Switch generation saw quite a few XBOX titles come to the platform. From Banjo-Kazooie to Ori and a other games in between, titles that one might think Microsoft would be keen to keep confined to the XBOX ecosystem have been popping up on Nintendo hardware, and even the likes of Master Chief and Gears of War are now on PlayStation and elsewhere. It’s certainly left fans scratching their heads wondering what the point of owning an XBOX even is if they can play all the games on whichever other consoles they choose.

Well, XBOX seems to be seeing the light and realizing that perhaps not everything it makes should be going multiplatform. Yesterday, XBOX Chief Content Officer Matt Booty spoke about console exclusives, saying that XBOX’s evaluation of single-player titles is “going to be case-by-case,” but that “big multiplayer games and live service games are going to continue to be multiplatform.” Thus, it isn’t a guarantee that Cuphead 2 or Mighty Cuphead Adventure will come to all of the platforms that the original Cuphead did. However, it is worth noticing that the verbage on the Mighty Cuphead Adventure website does refer to “consoles” plural when talking about where the game will land, so… make of that what you will.

No matter how it shakes out, more Cuphead is a good thing. Are you looking forward to either of these two titles? Let us know in the comments and on social media!
