The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a monster hit when it arrived in theaters back in 2023. It was so beloved that Nintendo estimates 169.84 million people went to watch the film in theaters and that it helped to spur sales of the games, too. Needless to say, the sequel has some high expectations, but thus far fans don’t know very much about it beyond its April 3, 2026 release date.

A potential leak might be spicing things up, however, as Wario64 on X pointed out that a blurb from NBCUniversal refers to a movie dubbed Super Mario World. Here’s what the text looked like before it was edited:
An exciting range of films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation and Illumination were presented, including Megan 2.0, Nobody 2, Bad Guys 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Black Phone 2, HIM, The Phoenician Scheme, Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions.
Super Mario World is, of course, the title of the iconic and massively influential SNES launch title from 1991. As noted above, the mention of Super Mario World has since been removed, but considering Universal is producing the sequel alongside Nintendo… well, odds are decent that this was a legitimate slip of the tongue.
Until it’s confirmed, this is, of course, just a rumor, but once we hear something official we’ll pass it along to all of you.
