As though it isn’t exciting enough to hear that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is coming back to theaters this June, Nintendo has also announced that it is once again working with Illumination on a film based on the world of the first movie. The announcement was made yesterday in celebration of MAR10 Day 2024 via the company’s X account. Here’s the short clip, which features Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto:

In brief, Miyamoto says that this new Mario movie will release on April 3, 2026. This film will be “based on the world of Super Mario Bros.,” which leaves many to speculate what that might entail. Some have speculated that Nintendo and Illumination might be working to spin off Mario into its own cinematic universe of characters and films. With the likes of Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Princess Peach, and countless other characters from the IP, the possibilities are (nearly) endless.

I can’t decide if I’m hoping for Wart and Subcon, or Wario and Waluigi. Both seem ripe for cinematic antics, but both are also downplayed by modern Nintendo.
