Years in the distant past (or perhaps not so long ago), Nintendo ran a well-loved label known as Player’s Choice, where it would take popular titles (pretty much every Mario and Zelda game ever; sometimes games like Tales of Symphonia or, heck, Kobe Bryant in NBA Courtside) and market them for a much lower MSRP than other games– usually around $19.99 USD (£19.99/$29.99 CND). While that faded in the first few years of Wii’s reign, likely because Nintendo liked pocketing large amounts of cash, it resurfaced once again in May 2011, rebranded as “Nintendo Selects”. (With Nintendo’s newfound success in “casual” markets, “Player’s Choice” apparently didn’t seem friendly enough.) While originally only composed of launch-window games, Twilight Princess and a retail Wii Sports among them, today Nintendo revealed four more games that people might have missed out on: Super Paper Mario, Mario Strikers Charged, Punch-Out!! and Super Mario Galaxy.
You know these games. You want these games.
While many Nintendojoites probably already own Super Mario Galaxy, many in general seemed to ignore Super Paper Mario, which was actually pretty delightful in its creative dimension-warping mechanic, while Punch-Out!! seems constantly pushed to the island of misfit Nintendo franchises considering how often people forget about the IP. Nevertheless, now that these games are part of Nintendo Selects, there’s no better time to check them out.
As always, the full press release is below.
