Pokkén Tournament has been finally shown in all its glory, with a lot of new information announced regarding how the game works. Unlike Namco’s popular fighting series, Tekken, Pokkén Tournament will be a mix of 3D and 2D fighting. Judging by the videos, the game controls with complete 3D movement while players keep a distance between each other, but after certain hits, it starts functioning like a 2D fighting game, with a fixed camera and a 2D plain. Also unlike Tekken, Pokkén Tournament doesn’t have a distinction between high, middle, and low attacks, as all of them can be blocked with the guard button. On the other hand, like most fighters today, Pokkén Tournament does have a super meter known in the game as Resonance Burst mode, which powers up all of your attacks for a limited period of time.
So far, the confirmed list of characters looks like this (not counting the support cast):
- Pikachu
- Machamp
- Lucario
- Suicune
- Gardevoir
- Blaziken
Pokkén Tournament location tests start next week in Japan, so hopefully we will see the game ported to Wii U a year from now. How do you like the gameplay videos? Can you feel the hype?

This looks really cool, I have to admit. I just really hope there’s a chance this will eventually make its way to Wii U. In North America.
I’m definitely in. Let’s get a US Wii U release date, huh Nintendo?
