The rise of indie gaming has resulted in a number of retro-inspired titles. These throwbacks have found a certain niche among older gamers, and those that weren’t around for the 8 and 16-bit eras. One such example, Whoa Dave!, released on the 3DS eShop in 2014. If developer Choice Provisions has their way, the title will receive another release, this time on a much older format: on an NES cartridge! In an interview with Tiny Cartridge, director Jason Cirillo mentioned the team’s desire to do just that.
Yes, we are very keen on doing a cart-based version of Woah Dave! Our preferred platform would be NES because the NES is rad. I think we can all agree on that.
Cirillo went on to mention that, should the game see a cartridge release, a custom box would be included, as well. Of course, there will be hurdles to overcome to manage such a port. The game’s graphics will have to be downgraded, for starters. Luckily, one of the staff members at Choice Provisions has knowledge of porting to old systems, so it wouldn’t be out of the question.
This isn’t the first case of a developer releasing a new game on an old platform, but it’s always interesting to say the least. Retro purists can get a new game on an old format and relive the glory days, when blowing on cartridges was a necessity.
