As if Super Smash Bros. and Hyrule Warriors weren’t enough for fans of Nintendo-based anthology violence, the head of The Pokémon Company has announced a new fighting game featuring Pokémon characters. Pokkén Fighters will be coming to Japanese arcades next year, and features a variety of playable characters including Lucario and Machamp. While trademarks appeared around a year ago for a game by the same name, it wasn’t until today that official confirmation was released.
The game is being developed by industry veterans Namco Bandai and is, according to SoulCalibur producer Masaaki Hoshino, “For adult Pokémon fans, because we got our best developers, we made the best graphics, and created the best action game, so please! Please look forward to this!”
While Pokémon spin-offs are many and varied, a one-on-one fighting game has not yet been attempted, and no console or Western version has yet been announced (although it appears likely that they will be).
