If there was any doubt remaining about Pokémon’s enduring popularity, the series’ latest installments, Pokémon Sun and Moon, have absolutely shattered them. According to Nintendo, the pair have sold over 3.7 million copies in the Americas since their release two weeks ago, making them the regions’ fastest-selling titles in Nintendo’s history.
The games have been shattering sales records in other parts of the world as well; in Europe, the pair have sold 1.5 million units in their first week on the market, making them the biggest European launch in Nintendo’s history.
These record sales have no doubt been spurred in part by Pokémon Go, the augmented-reality Pokémon game that was released for mobile phones earlier this year (and shattered its own sales records). Sun and Moon also diverge from the series’ template in some notable ways, taking place in the tropical Alola region and eschewing the games’ signature Gym challenges for a looser series of “island trials,” making them one of the most daring pairs of installments in the franchise yet.
Are you one of the millions of players who have taken a trip to the Alola region? Let us know in the comments!
