The sales numbers are out and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have sold more copies in Japan than Pokémon Sword and Shield did in their first two weeks. Diamond and Pearl have sold a total of 1,750,688 copies in Japan alone whereas Sword and Shield sold 1,740,084. Is this the power of nostalgia or did the Sword and Shield controversies have an impact on their sales?

It’s more likely the former rather than the latter. Sword and Shield are actually the third highest selling Pokémon games of all time.

Top 15 Selling Pokémon games (data accumulated by Gamerant)

  1. Pokémon Red and Blue/Green – 31.05 million
  2. Pokémon Gold and Silver – 23.73 million
  3. Pokémon Sword and Shield – 21.10 million
  4. Pokémon Diamond and Pearl – 17.67 million
  5. Pokémon X and Y – 16.53 million
  6. Pokémon Sun and Moon – 16.25 million
  7. Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire – 16.22 million
  8. Pokémon Black and White – 15.64 million
  9. Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Version – 14.64 million
  10. Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire – 14.39 million
  11. Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee – 13.28 million
  12. Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver – 12.72 million
  13. Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen – 12.0 million
  14. Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon – 8.98 million
  15. Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 – 8.52

An interesting pattern is that, even though sequels and remakes do make it onto the list, they all make up the bottom half. Is the success of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl tied to the nostalgia that comes with remakes or is it something else? Will this act as a sign to the Pokémon Company to focus their effort on more remakes in the future?
