Things are starting to get pretty crazy in the world of video games. Console prices have skyrocketed, game prices have increased between $10 and $20 apiece, and soon, many consoles won’t even have the option for discs or cartridges. Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine console (which has a starting MSRP of $1049) won’t have a disc drive, while XBOX’s Project Helix is also said to be ditching discs. Next up to the plate? Sony’s PlayStation 5 and upcoming PlayStation 6 will also be foregoing physical media.

As of January 2028, Sony will no longer be printing games on discs. The company made the announcement via its official PlayStation Blog, stating that the decision was made as a “response to shifting trends in consumer preference.” Another huge factor is the cost of memory in general, as AI has been making it more and more expensive as the technlogy becomes more prevalent. The video game industry has been trying to kick the cost over to consumers for a while now; look no further than things like Game Key Cards, which are just download codes in a box, with the cartridge used as a so-called key to access the software on the console’s internal storage.
With this move, Nintendo is going to be essentially the last company offering fans physical games for purchase. However, with the aforementioned Game Key Cards being an option, who knows when Nintendo might make the leap and stop offering games on cartridges in response to its competitors. It’s a disheartening move for consumers, as the transition will very likely not result in lower game prices, and it also makes ownership dubious given digital games grant access via licenses and not actual rights to the game itself. Game preservationists are already crying out about Sony’s decision, and the feedback online has been overwhelmingly negative.
Will this result in a reversal to physical games? Probably not, but who knows; if consumer outrage is high enough, companies like Sony and Microsoft might have to reconsider. Why not lets us know what you think of this news down below and online!
