Despite the next generation of video game consoles having been kicked off by Sony and Microsoft last year, Nintendo Switch remains king. In terms of unit sales and dollar sales, the console was number one in the United States in 2021. The data was revealed by The NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella via Twitter.
December 2021 US NPD THREAD – December 2021 consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories fell 1% when compared to a year ago, to $7.5 billion. 2021 consumer spending reached a record $60.4 billion, 8% higher when compared to 2020. pic.twitter.com/T5J3sjKIlG

This is good news for Nintendo, surely, but there are circumstances to keep in mind while looking at this information. Throughout 2021, both PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series S and X consoles were all very hard to come by due to manufacturing shortages. However, Switch itself has been in short supply, as well, due to the same issues. Nintendo Switch OLED Model has been notoriously difficult to obtain since it launched in October. These challenges have apparently not kept Nintendo from maintaining the top spot here in the US, a feat that bodes well for continued support of the console moving forward. What’s more, Nintendo Switch was also the best-selling console in the UK and Japan in 2021. Things are certainly looking up for the House of Mario.
