During today’s Nintendo Direct, a big surprise arrived in the form of Virtual Game Cards. Nintendo is allowing fans to treat their digital games like physical games in the sense that they can now be lent to other users. Yes, rather like Steam Family Sharing, Nintendo Switch users can transfer a game over to a friend to play—for up to two weeks. Yes, it seems there are some strings attached, but regardless, it’s nice to see the concept of digital ownership of games being treated a little bit more like, well, actual ownership.
The update, which is coming in late April, will make it so that users can quickly share games between systems. This will also be useful for those with more than one Switch, as the feature works for that scenario, as well. What’s more, those with a Nintendo Switch 2 will also be able to take advantage of Virtual Game Cards. It certainly isn’t a perfect setup from the sound of things, but it’s a step in the right direction, if nothing else.
