Earlier this week, the rumor mill started spinning after it was revealed that NBC Universal registered the domain supermariogalaxy.movie, which had people wondering whether that would be the title of the upcoming sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That’s because Universal used the domain thesupermariobros.movie for the first movie, so it made sense to assume a pattern was emerging.
https://t.co/EHknBYD082 (Super Mario Galaxy film) domain also registered by NBC Universal on Sept 3rd.
For the first movie, Universal used https://t.co/kT7oaJCDzS for the movie’s website (now points to VOD/Disc links since it’s been out for years) https://t.co/q0zVL2LsAI pic.twitter.com/2uvjPnIwJQ

Looks like that was a fair assumption, because during today’s Nintendo Direct, we got our first look at the new film and its official title in a brief teaser trailer. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is coming to theaters in April 2026 from Nintendo, Illumination Studios, and Universal, and it looks like Mario is headed to space, much like in the Super Mario Galaxygames.
However, while the film will take inspiration from those games, that’s not the only source material it’ll be pulling from. According to Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination and co-producer of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, “While the Super Mario Galaxy games are the core inspiration for our story, this next film holds surprises for fans of every Mario era.” Illumination is aiming to go big with this second film, because, per Meledandri, the team is “very busy working to deliver a film that aspires to earn its place in the history [of the Super Mario Bros. franchise] we’re here to celebrate.”
What pieces of Mario Bros. history do you hope to see in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie? Any particular characters, power-ups, locations, enemies, or something else? Let us know in the comments!
