Nintendo kicked off today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast in a big way by announcing a few new details for Pokémon X and Y, the upcoming 3DS installments of the popular series.

Perhaps the biggest of these announcements was the reveal of a brand new Pokémon type– Fairy. As speculated, the newest Eevee evolution Sylveon is a Fairy-type monster, which is said to be super effective against Dragon Pokémon. A few older creatures like Jigglypuff, Marill, and Gardevoir are also being reclassified as Fairy types. In addition to that, we got a brief look at two new Pokémon: a new bat-like monster called Noivern, and a butterfly Pokémon named Vivillon.

Another big new feature announced during the broadcast is “Pokémon-Aime,” a new way to improve your relationship with your Pokémon. Like in Nintendogs, players can use the touch screen to pet their Pokémon and feed them special treats, which will raise their stats and strengthen the bond between you and your monsters.

That’s not the last of this week’s Pokémon-related announcements; there is also a special Pokémon round table set to take place later tonight, which will likely bring with it even more details on the games. Stay tuned to Nintendojo as the information starts to trickle in!

Pokémon X and Y are scheduled to launched worldwide on October 13.

I’m not really surprised about Jigglypuff being described as a Fairy type Pokemon just because of the general design of it. However, Marill? Really? That was just a Water Mouse type.

But hey, if they want to keep modifying the game to keep it interesting then so be it.

Can’t wait to see what other information they’ll put out later today/this evening.

Yeah, Marill seems like an odd choice. Maybe Azurill will be reclassified as a Fairy (instead of a Normal type), and that’ll carry over to its evolutions?

Either way, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how the Fairy type rebalances the game!

Yeah, especially with how Fairy types are effective against Dragon types.
