Though rumors have swirled for some time regarding a Super Mario Bros. movie, Nintendo officially confirmed today a partnership with Illumination and Universal Pictures to produce and distribute the character’s return to the big screen!
Illumination has produced a number of films for Universal Pictures, including the Despicable Me franchise and The Secret Life of Pets. While some fans may feel a sense of dread given the quality of Mario’s previous Hollywood outing, the film will be co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto! On Illumination’s side, company founder and CEO Chris Meledandri will also co-produce. With the character’s creator playing a pivotal role in the film’s production, fans can be assured Mario is in good hands.
