LEGO City Undercover is a significant departure for Traveller’s Tales’ games; not only is it the first LEGO game in a long time that isn’t propped up by a major pop culture license, but it is the first major game made exclusively for one console. Loz Doyle, the game’s Executive Producer, says this exclusivity impacted the game’s design.
“LEGO City Undercover would definitely lose something on other platforms,” he said. “Chase is actually given a LEGO version of the GamePad as his Police Communicator, so it’s really woven into the story.”
The GamePad also allows for several practical benefits. LEGO City follows in the footsteps of many other games to use the second screen as a handy, ever present map. The GamePad is also utilized as an in-game LEGO take on FaceTime by having communications come through as video calls instead of normal radio chatter.
LEGO City Undercover will launch for Wii U on March 18.
