Nintendo is rumored to be working with Illumination again, this time on movies centered around The Legend of Zelda and Luigi. Following the success of the pairs first movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it was almost guaranteed that Nintendo would continue making movies.
The source of these movie rumors is Zippo, who is quite accurate when it comes to Nintendo related gossip. This page also mentions two other projects, making this four total possible movies; one is a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a Donkey Kong project, and then the two mentioned above.
In relation to the Luigi movie, there are no details as of now, however, fans are hoping to see a rendition of Luigi’s Mansion on the big screen. The voice actor for Luigi, Charlie Day, has expressed interest in developing this animated film, so this could be a likely outcome.
Now as for the Zelda movie, the rumor states that the film is “an amalgamation of very different Zelda games”, meaning the film won’t be centered around one game in particular. Also, Link will be speaking according to Zippo, and this is not normally seen in the games. Unfortunately Illuminations CEO did shut down these rumors, but it could be a bluff. If not, at least we know it’s being talked about.
The biggest issue currently lies within the strikes happening amongst The WGA (Writers Guild Of America) as well as SAG (Screen Actors Guild). This means that the majority of Hollywood’s actors and writers will not be working at all. Nintendo and Universal are both on a pause, however, they were looking at a holiday 2025 release for Donkey Kong, and a 2026 release for Mario 2. Whether or not the strikes will impact these potential releases is unknown as of now.
